How do I get involved in athletics?

Pitzer students play on the same teams with Pomona students and our mascot is the mighty Sagehen! Playing a sport is an excellent way to get to know students from another campus. Pomona-Pitzer has varsity (Division III), club, and intramural sports. Want to play a varsity sport? Talk with the coach! All of their offices are located just south of Frary dining hall on Pomona’s campus in the Rains Athletic
Center. Varsity sports demand a high level of commitment. Some teams (water polo, swimming & diving, among others) have morning practices for most of the season as well as afternoon practices. Most varsity sports have practice or games for six days out of the week.
Commitment time varies for club sports, although many of them practice just as much as the varsity sports teams. If you’re looking for a minimal time commitment, try intramural sports that have games once a week. Each semester brings new options, and you can sign up a team of your friends!

What is Pitzer’s endowment? How does it work?

Pitzer’s endowment has grown steadily over the years, especially given the size and youth of our college. (As of last year) the endowment is invested in a U.S. Bank investment fund, and was valued at approximately $110 million, thanks to the sale of a $15 million Laguna Beach property owned by one of the founders of the college. Due to the recession, the endowment has lost approximately a quarter of its value. For comparison, Pomona College’s endowment has ranged from $900 million to $1.1 billion.

Weezie has participated in the 5C Peace and Justice Club, as well as the newly formed Invisible Children Club. She has also been participating in a micro-finance club at CMC (off and on) and recently attended a conference on micro-finance at USC. She’s interested in getting a micro-finance club of some sort started at Pitzer if there is interest. She works at the Study Abroad office and may be able to answer basic questions regarding study abroad.

Kelley Williams

Kelley is a Senior from Altadena, California. She has been apart of the 5C Hip Hop Dance Team for three years. She has participated in the 15 minute plays put on by Pomona playwrights, acted in the play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf” during her junior year, and was part of the Vagina Monologues during her sophomore year. Kelley was the President on the Holden Hall Council her Sophomore year. She is also a member of PASA and Rare Diamonds and is a Head Mentor of Ujima Head Mentors.

Sean Sullivan

Sean is a double major in Political Studies and International Intercultural Studies. Previously Sean served on the External Studies Committee for 2 years. Sean studied abroad in India, carrying out Sociology research with a Pitzer professor, and in China where he studied Mandarin and the environmental situation in Beijing. Sean is a member of POA, Pitzer Outdoor Adventures, and this year led a pre-orientation backpacking trip for first-year students to Golden Trout Wilderness, just outside Sequoia National Park. In addition to POA, Sean is involved with Student Senate, the student newspaper, and works as a writing tutor for Pitzer students. Sean has also worked in the Office of Admission as a tour guide for the last two years. In his free time Sean enjoys exploring the mountains and deserts of Southern California.

Alyssa has participated in PAS hall council, the 5C Competitive Ballroom team, and the Dance programs on both Pomona and Scripps campuses.

Yasi Razvan

Yasi is a senior and an Asian Studies major. She has been involved in CAPAS, Dining with Democracy, and women’s rugby, among other things.

Maya Rosas

Maya is involved in revolutionary direct action, teaching ESL to day laborers in Pomona and Rancho Cucamonga, occupying buildings, student senate in the Diversity Committee and Teaching and Learning Committee, working with the Ohlone tribe and organizing fundraisers and protests, creating an ESL Student-Teacher Union, making huge banners, CCCSI Bonner Fellowship and Internships, getting freshman involved in community-based activities.

Jon is a first-year student from Washington, D.C. He is a delegate on the Model United Nations team and a student-worker in the Office of Admission. He is also a member of the Pomona College Choir and actively participates on the ad-hoc Dining Hall Committee.

Lucia Reynolds

Lucia Reynolds is a first-year student from New York City, studying Media Studies and Political Studies. She is a member of Tea Time, Feminist Coalition and a contributing writer for the upcoming Pitzer newspaper the Orange Peel.

She’s also hoping to become more involved with attending senate meetings, and going to Art Collective.
